Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Extra flour for dusting
- Olive oil for greasing
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Mix well to ensure even distribution of salt.
- Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the flour mixture along with the olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air and transfer it back to the floured surface.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, oregano, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using) over the dough.
- Fold the dough over itself a few times to incorporate the cheese and herbs evenly. Knead gently for another 2-3 minutes.
- Divide the dough into two equal portions. Flatten each portion slightly and roll tightly from one end to the other to shape into loaves.
- Pinch the seams to seal and tuck the ends under to create a nice shape.
- Place the loaves onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a greased loaf pan, leaving space between them.
- Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until puffed up.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Optionally, brush the tops of the loaves with olive oil for a golden crust.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- For added flavor, feel free to experiment with different herbs or cheese varieties.
- Ensure the water temperature is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- Store any leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
